Russia suffers a culture with a slave mentality. The Slavs call themselves that because it means "glory" and is probably related to the word for word (slov). But many slavs were captured by the Romans and used as slaves. The word slav and slave are connected.

Russia's soviet governance was against the background of an already brutal alcoholic conspiratorial culture. The Boyars basically still shape Russian politics.
China escaped most all of the horrors of the Russian soviet system. This is partly because Chinese culture is better but also because Mao Zedong was very intelligent.
The current government of Russia is going to end violently. It would be wise for China to try to build up local communist parties in Russia, especially Maoist ones.

The USA and USSR did in fact engage in a mutually destructive cold war for 75 years. Russia lost, in part because of the problems in Russia i explained. The Russian economic system was inferior to the USA's. To try to make their economy less inefficient they introduced economic and political reforms. These ultimately led to capitalist restoration and a consequent brutal violent decade. The violence and poverty in Russia in the 1990s was not an intended policy of the USA, but greedy opportunistic capitalists also didn't care much or do much so Russia went from drunk Yeltsin to KGB Putin, and here we are.
Putin is not in fact a communist, partly because he sees how inefficient the USSR economy was and also because he is genuinely religious.

But people are often fearful, or greedy, or hateful, or ignorant. So the majority can be misled. But I think people are more greedy than fearful and thus can be led away from war and toward peace.
