In the immediately prior issue, I pointed out the idea that five sticks (the five nations, each like the fingers of a fist), bound together, are stronger united, and form a sixth stick (the sixth nation). This was of course a direct teaching of the Haudenosaunee. Elsewhere I have published, rightly, that several of the Haudenosaunee governance ideas were taken up by the U.S. Constitution, including “we the people” and federalism, which then indirectly recur at the U.N. The founding instrument of the Haudenosaunee confederation is “The Great Law of Peace”. So it should not surprise me when China noticed that and then published this:

Just like the USA sometimes becomes concerned about human rights of minority nations in China, China is likewise concerned about human rights of minorities in the USA. If you wish to improve the well being of ordinary people facing oppression or exploitation you are better to focus on actual concrete measures, whether in the form of educational opportunities, medical care, food aid than vague generalties or building mass organizations. Trying to empower troublemakers like me usually does not improve the well being of ordinary people, might lead to backlash against them by the majority. Furthermore, empowering troublemakers generally does not get the funding state’s goals met, even when hopeful, optimistic, and in good faith. Each culture should expose its own values and seek to learn from all other cultures. My own culture desperately wants peace — and will fight to the death for it. This does not mean I am not barbaric! In fact, I really am! A very well-read thug, yep, thats me, 不相信我，就去你妈的. Maybe you should do what I suggest? Persuasive rules attract compliance, emulation, and replication.

State power can only use culture as an attractive force and not for much more than that. However, state power can and does and should foster its own culture, expose and express it, so others may learn. The best thing you can do for my human rights is show me your ways. If your ways are better they will inevitably be taken up voluntarily and thus more effectively by others.

Probably you never heard of “The Weather Underground”. They were a US left wing terrorist group. Mostly they were white, rich, naive/idealist/foolish. They killed few people and spent many years in jail.

You may also never have heard of “the winds” codes. Imperial Japan (大日本帝国), prior to its war against colonialists, a war which sought not to end colonialism but to replace European colonialism with Japanese colonialism, had several “weather reports” to indicate whether the war was to be fought against Russia, USA, Britain, Netherlands.

“Rising Winds, Surging Waves” is how I would translate that because this yong has the water radical. Basically this cheng yu is saying China faces increasing foreign problems and even some low level but widespread domestic unrest (minor complaints, but millions of them). Whenever you think you oppose someone else’s idea you better understand it so thoroughly that you can explain to them, in their own terms, what is wrong with the idea. You must not try to correct others, because people will identify their SELF with their IDEA. “That idea is inaccurate because” is the way to go. Not “You are wrong.” Criticize the idea NOT the person! Otherwise, they will dig their heels in and double down and persist in being wrong all the way to the grave, hopefully theirs and not yours!

You are not your ideas! Neither is anyone else. But most people identify their self-concept with their ideas. You must understand ideas in order to have correct ideas and to help others have correct ideas too. None of us is as strong as all of us.

Though it largely goes unexamined in the West, there is in fact an enormous corpus of “Marxist” writing. It is likely the CCP has not engaged with all of it and that the Westerners have similarly not considered the vast “Marxist” literature in Chinese (or Vietnamese or Korean for that matter).
