🌻Ukraine's War Strategy Against the Russian Invasion: Two Tracks to Victory🌻
As Russias war on Ukraine intensifies, Ukraine's military strategy has two prongs: elastic defence, and deep strikes inside Russia.
I. Elastic defence emphasizes flexibility and adaptability in the face of a numerically superior enemy, trading territory for dead Russian bodies. Elastic defence involves yielding territory in order to conserve resources and exploit favorable opportunities to strike back. Elastic defence has often been employed to great effect history. An elastic defence uses the superior leadership and tactics of the mobile defending force against a less agile, less well led, and tactically inferior enemy, which however is numericallly superior, for now.
The elastic defence prong of Ukraine’s victory through attrition strategy aims at inflicting maximum casualties on the Russian military with ambushes, traps, and heavily fortified posts that are held to the breaking point and then abandoned to lure the Russians into yet another ambush, all the while minimizing Ukrainian losses and inflicting maximum casualties on the invader.
Ukraine’s attritional approach aims for a a ratio of Russian to Ukrainian casualties of at least 3:1, and ideally an exchange rate as high as 10:1. Trading Ukrainian land for Russian bodies is desirable, as the ultimate goal is to deplete the Russian army's resources and manpower. Moreover, the Russian occupier increasingly will meet partisan activity, saboteurs and snipers in the lands the invader thinks they conquered.
Territorial control is only secondary to Ukraine’s objective of bleeding the Russian army white and draining Russia's economy of oil. Holding ground is not so crucial for Ukraine. Depleting the Russian army's manpower and resources while preserving Ukraine’s own forces are the keys to victory, not territorial control. Ukrainian commanders are thus willing to cede territory if it means preserving the lives of their soldiers. Their focus is on capturing and killing Russian soldiers, not capturing or holding territory.
II. The Second prong of this fork is deep strikes inside Russia. Ukraine is also targeting Russia's rear with deep strikes, aiming to disrupt supply lines, destroy key infrastructure, and cripple the Russian economy depriving Russia of oil and destroying Russian aircraft on the ground as well as war industries. By doing so, Ukraine will create a ripple, effect ultimately weakening the Russian front line by siphoning off forces to defend Russia’s rear and by hindering Russian resupply to the front lines in Ukraine. The destruction of Russian war materiel is a secondary objective, desirable, but not at the cost of Ukrainian lives, since much of the equipment will wind up captured or even in the hands of mutinous Russians rebelling who will wind up fighting against Putin's mafia state.
Ukraine's deep strikes prioritize targeting Russian oil and air assets, as well as factories that produce military equipment with air strikes, sabotage, and by infiltrators. The goal is to cripple Russia's ability to wage war, making it increasingly difficult for them to support their frontline Ukraine.
Targeting Russian infrastructure is necessary to bring a swift end to the war. Targeting Russia's economic and industrial base, Ukraine will create a situation in which the Russian military is unable to sustain itself on the front lines, ultimately leading to a collapse of the Russian war effort. Whether Russia's elite break economically and betray Putin before the Russian frontline collapses from lack of supply is an open question, but deep strikes inside Russia itself alongside an elastic defense inside Ukraine will lead to either outcome.
Ukraine's strategy is effective. Russian casualties continue to mount. and are unsustainable. The Russian military at times already lacks fuel and cannot exploit breakthroughs. As the conflict continues, it's clear the dual track strategy advocated here is paying off.
The success of Ukraine's strategy can be attributed to its well-structured and coherent approach, which is based on a deep understanding of the facts on the ground and human nature: coherent, logical, persuasive strategies with effective tactics prevail. In contrast, Russia's approach has been marked by lies and illusions, horrible leadership at all levels, failing to sway even their own people as well as the international community and have not and will not attain Russia's objectives.
As the war in Ukraine rages on, it's clear Ukraine's strategy is winning. By prioritizing destruction of Russian personnel, oil infrastructure, and air assets Ukraine is paralyzing the Russian mechanized units capacity to advance, clawing back air superiority, and wrecking the Russian economy. This will lead to a coup in Moscow, a collapse on the front lines, and possibly to rebellions, mutinies, and revolution in Russia, all of which are desirable goals. All the while Ukraine will minimize her own losses, creating a situation in which Russia's military is increasingly unable to sustain itself. The exact outcome, coup, civil war, or frontline collapse is still uncertain, but Ukraine's two fisted approach, deep strikes and elastic defence, is paying off. Ukraine has more than one path to victory. Russia has no path to victory.
